I was really excited about this game coming out. As a fan of kart racing games and SEGA in general, the expectations I set for the game were maybe too high.
I rented the game and played it a friend's house.
There's 24 tracks in the game total, and many of them are very similar to the others.
For instance, there's three or four race tracks each from Samba De Amigo, Sonic, and House of the Dead.
The same music track is played on each of the different level themes, which makes the music grate on you quite quickly hearing the same track repeated over and over again for the same theme levels.
So I would say that there's maybe 6 race tracks in total that feel fresh.
I hope you like Casino's because three levels have you racing around in casino inspired tracks which are all extremely similar.
As it stands, there's 5 genre tracks (House of the Dead, Billy Hatcher, Sonic, Jet Set Radio Future, and Super Monkey Ball).
What's disappointing is that SEGA has so many brands it could have incorporated into the game besides these characters and tracks, such as Phantasy Star. (That would be awesome.) I enjoyed seeing Jet Set Radio Future tracks and hearing "Understand The Concept of Love" but most of the race tracks in the game are not at all exciting to play.
The character variety is decent, however the unlockable characters like Ryo (Shenmue), Ulala (Space Channel 5), BD Joe (Crazy Taxi), etc. should have had their own race tracks, and they don't which is a shame and hopefully DLC will arrive to include this.
Sure, the tracks that are in the game are colorful and look good, but it's not crazy fun racing on them. Super Monkey Ball levels especially are annoying with all of the turns.
By the end of finishing the entire Grand Prix, all I wanted to do was go back and play Jet Set Radio Future.
If DLC comes out for this game, than it would probably be a good buy, but as it stands a rental is all you really need.
You can finish all of the races in less than three hours and you probably won't want to do anything much else besides unlock the extra characters and try out all of the character's special moves (which is pretty cool.) Other unlockables are track courses, but you already played them in Grand Prix mode...
Viva Pinata Party Animals racing levels felt more fun to play... anyone else agree?
I'd say anyone under 16 will probably enjoy it a lot more than I did.
To end off on a positive note, it's nice to use your avatar in the game, and the karts are awesome!
Curious to see what your thoughts are.
