Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé On Why The Switch Uses A Mobile App For Voice Chat

One feature of the Nintendo Switch that has caused frustration among its fan base is the way in which the console handles voice chat. Rather than having voice chat features run directly through the console - just like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One - the Switch relies on a separate smartphone app which must be connected to the game you're currently playing.

To say that players are unhappy with this decision would be an understatement, with online reactions to news surrounding the dedicated app seeming almost exclusively negative. When Fortnite released on the system this summer, the game proved that voice chat could be implemented directly through the Switch after all, but Nintendo is still committed to using the app and actually updated it to support more titles just last month.


So why did Nintendo choose to use an app rather than having the feature run through the console itself? Well, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé discussed the very topic during this week's Seattle's Geekwire Summit, after changing the topic slightly from a question which asked about fans' concerns regarding a lack of dedicated servers for online play. Here's what he had to say:

"Nintendo's approach is to do things differently. We have a much different suite of experiences than our competitors offer, and we do that in a different way. This creates a sort of yin and yang for our consumers. They’re excited about cloud saves and legacy content but wish we might deliver voice chat a different way, for example.

"What we see is a situation where we know that Nintendo Switch is being played in the open, at a park, on a metro bus. We believe the easiest way for you to connect and have a peer-to-peer experience with voice chat is with your mobile phone. It’s always there, it’s always with you."

Surprise! A Special Version Of The Legend Of Zelda Has Appeared In The Switch's NES Library

If you're a subscriber of the recently launched Nintendo Switch Online service, and especially if you're a fan of the instant-access NES catalogue now available to you, you may well be aware that today sees the release of three new games. Well, it turns out there's actually a fourth - and it's a spin on a Zelda classic.

Yes, as promised, Solomon’s Key, NES Open Tournament Golf and Super Dodge Ball have all arrived, bumping the standard roster of NES games up to 23 in total, but this new Zelda option takes that total up another notch. Called 'The Legend of Zelda – Living the life of luxury!', the game acts as a "souped-up version of The Legend of Zelda", giving players access to pretty much everything from the start. Take a look.

As you can see, players start with all equipment and lots of rupees and items, making the adventure a whole lot easier and much, much quicker, we'd imagine. Interestingly, beating the game in this way will unlock a "more difficult version" called Second Quest. Whether this is more in line with the normal adventure, or still plays like this new 'Luxury' style, is yet to be seen.

Seltsame Idee. Und nehme stark an, der Second Quest hier wird genauso sein wie jener im Original, halt mit den gleichen Item- und Rubinmassen.

Früher hat man das cheaten genannt aber heute kann man das eben mit offizieller Erlaubnis Ist halt einfach ein Tourist-Mode für Leute die da keinen Nerv für haben reinzukommen.

Nintendo Switch Online – bald mit SNES-Spielen und noch mehr?

Wer sich für knapp 20 Euro im Jahr Nintendo Switch Online gönnt (also den originell betitelten Online-Service für die Switch), bekommt bekanntlich neben Onlinematches und Cloud-Saves auch eine App, mit der eine Reihe emulierter NES-Spiele gezockt werden können.

Diese haben nun ein paar schlaue Tüftler genauer unter die Lupe genommen und interessante Hinweise entdeckt, die darauf schließen lassen, dass Nintendo noch mehr vorhaben könnte – und zwar SNES-Spiele sowie womöglich auch noch andere Systeme anzubieten.

Der Twitter-User KapuccinoHeck hat gleich eine ganze Liste an Titeln ausgegraben, die im Code der App referenziert werden:

Bei dieser Auswahl könnte man nicht meckern. Und sein Kollege OatmealDome fügt noch hinzu, dass er in der App gleich vier Emulator gefunden haben will – einer ist logischerweise für NES, einer wird nun für SNES vermutet und die zwei anderen sind unbekannt, wobei Game Boy und GBA wohl die logischsten Kandidaten wären.

OatmealDome stellt außerdem fest, dass der NES-Emulator praktisch identisch ist mit der Software, die im NES Mini zum Einsatz kommt, womit dann wohl auch bei etwaiger SNES-Unterstützung ähnlich vorgegangen werden dürfte.

Von Nintendo gibt es natürlich bislang keine Reaktionen auf diese Enthüllungen, warten wir also erst einmal ab, was da noch so kommen mag.

Ja, wenn sich das bewahrheiten würde, dann könnte ich so langsam mal in betracht ziehen den Online Dienst zu machen. Nur trotzdem darf auch da die Auswahl größer werden. Und vor allen N64, sowie GC Spiele hinein!
